Wands

Tarot

Definition

The suit of Wands (or Staves, Batons, Clubs) in the tarot Minor Arcana, traditionally associated with the element of fire, action, creativity, ambition and spirit.

Origin

The Wands suit descends from the polo-sticks of the Mamluk deck, reinterpreted as wooden staves or club-like wands by 15th-century Italian card-makers. Its association with fire was formalised by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in the 1880s.

Development

Aleister Crowley's Thoth deck reassigned Wands to air (intellect, communication), departing from the Golden Dawn standard. Most modern decks retain the older fire correspondence, making "Wands = fire" the default unless explicitly stated otherwise.

In Practice

Wands cards in a reading address questions of career direction, creative projects, courage and personal will. The Ace of Wands signals new inspiration; the 10 of Wands marks burdensome over-commitment. Court cards represent fiery personalities or roles.

Deeper Reading

Beyond literal action, the suit also represents identity and life-purpose. The progression from Ace to 10 traces the arc of any creative endeavour, from spark to exhaustion, making the Wands suite a complete model of any project life-cycle.
