Sun Sign

Astrology

Definition

The zodiac sign occupied by the Sun at the moment of birth, representing core identity, vitality and the conscious ego.

Origin

Sun-sign astrology became popular through the British astrologer R. H. Naylor's 1930 newspaper column for Princess Margaret's birth, which evolved into the modern horoscope column. Before then, astrology was rarely sign-based — it focused on planets, houses and aspects.

Development

Classical astrology treated the Sun as just one of seven traditional planets. Modern sun-sign astrology, popularised in 20th-century newspapers, elevated it to primary identity marker. The cultural dominance of "what's your sign?" reflects the medium (mass print), not the astrology.

In Practice

The sun sign describes the core energy a person tries to embody — Aries directness, Taurus stability, Gemini variety, etc. It is most accurate as a description of conscious self-image; the moon sign and ascendant often describe felt experience and outward presentation more accurately.

Deeper Reading

Reducing a person to their sun sign is astrology's most popular and least accurate gesture. The same sun sign can manifest very differently depending on house placement, aspects from other planets, and the rising sign. A natal chart contains 12 zodiac influences, not one.
