Stellium
AstrologyDefinition
A cluster of three or more planets in the same zodiac sign or astrological house, concentrating planetary energy in a single area of life.
Origin
The term entered English-language astrology in the mid-20th century, though the underlying concept — multiple planets in conjunction — is as old as Hellenistic astrology. The Latinate name reflects its spread through 20th-century educational astrology.
Development
Different astrologers set different thresholds: three planets is most common, but some require four or more for the term to apply. Stelliums in the same sign produce a strong personality emphasis; stelliums in the same house focus life experience on that area.
In Practice
A person with a stellium in Capricorn often experiences Capricornian themes (work, ambition, structure) as their core identity. Stelliums in the 7th house pull life-themes toward partnerships. The trade-off: deep specialisation comes with diminished access to other zodiac qualities.
Deeper Reading
Stelliums often correlate with vocational concentration — many high-profile professionals have stelliums marking their field. The same concentration can produce blind spots: a Virgo stellium may have remarkable analytical skill but struggle with Pisces qualities of imagination and surrender.
