Retrograde Mercury
AstrologyDefinition
The roughly three-week period, three or four times a year, when Mercury appears to move backwards through the zodiac from Earth's perspective. Astrologically associated with miscommunication, technology glitches and the need to review unfinished matters.
Origin
Retrograde motion is an optical illusion caused by relative orbital speeds between Earth and an outer planet (or, for inner planets, by the geometry of their orbit). Babylonian and Hellenistic astronomers documented it carefully without yet understanding heliocentric mechanics.
Development
All planets retrograde periodically. Mercury retrograde became the most culturally prominent in the late 20th century, popularised by astrologers like Susan Miller. Its three-week duration and frequency made it easy to integrate into modern self-help vocabulary.
In Practice
Astrologically, Mercury retrograde is treated as a time to slow down on new launches (especially involving communication, travel, tech), review and edit existing projects, and expect miscommunications. Practical effect ranges from negligible to noticeable depending on which houses the retrograde transits.
Deeper Reading
Scientific studies find no statistically significant change in actual technology failures or accidents during Mercury retrograde. The pattern's power lies in confirmation bias: when warned to expect glitches, people remember the ones that happen and forget the ones that do not.
