Natal Chart

Astrology

Definition

A map of the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and chart angles relative to the zodiac and houses at the exact moment and place of birth.

Origin

Natal astrology was systematised by Hellenistic astrologers in Alexandria (1st century BCE - 2nd century CE), building on Babylonian and Egyptian planetary observation. The earliest surviving Greek horoscope dates from 71 BCE.

Development

Modern natal charts include 10 "planets" (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, plus outer planets Uranus, Neptune, Pluto), the ascendant, midheaven, lunar nodes and sometimes additional points (asteroids, Chiron). Software like Astro.com or Astro-Seek calculates them instantly.

In Practice

Reading a natal chart involves three layers: (1) planet (what energy), (2) sign (how it expresses), (3) house (where in life it plays out). Aspects (angular relationships between planets) modify these meanings. A full reading combines all four layers across all 10 placements.

Deeper Reading

The natal chart is properly a tool for self-understanding, not prediction. Carl Jung used it as a personality typology long before he formulated his archetypes. The chart shows tendencies and structural patterns — not destiny, not character flaws.
