Moon Sign

Astrology

Definition

The zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at the moment of birth, representing emotional nature, inner needs and the unconscious response to life.

Origin

The Moon has been an astrological focus since Babylonian times, with the Moon-sign concept formalised in Hellenistic astrology. Vedic astrology has always treated the Moon sign (rashi) as more significant than the Sun sign, the opposite of modern Western pop astrology.

Development

The Moon completes a zodiac circuit every 27-28 days, meaning it changes sign every 2.5 days. Calculating an accurate moon sign therefore requires the exact birth date, not just the year, and ideally the birth time when the Moon is near a sign change.

In Practice

The moon sign describes how a person feels and processes emotion, what they need to feel safe, and how they respond instinctively under stress. Many astrologers find it a more accurate everyday descriptor of personality than the sun sign, especially for introspection.

Deeper Reading

The Moon also represents the maternal imago and how nurture was received — an aspect Carl Jung found psychologically rich. Difficult moon-sign placements (in Capricorn, Scorpio) often indicate unmet emotional needs from childhood that adult life must consciously address.
