Life Path Number

Numerology

Definition

The single-digit numerology number (1-9, plus master numbers 11, 22, 33) calculated from a birth date by summing all digits and reducing, representing the core life purpose and lessons.

Origin

Number-personality systems trace to Pythagorean philosophy (6th century BCE), which held that numbers express the structure of reality. Modern Western numerology was popularised by Mrs. L. Dow Balliett (1908) and Florence Campbell, who systematised the Life Path calculation now standard.

Development

To calculate: add all digits of the birth date (e.g., 14 April 1985 → 1+4+4+1+9+8+5 = 32 → 3+2 = 5). Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are not reduced further. The result identifies the Life Path archetype.

In Practice

Each Life Path number has a thematic life direction: 1 leadership and independence, 2 partnership, 3 creative expression, 4 stability and work, 5 freedom, 6 service and nurture, 7 introspection, 8 material mastery, 9 humanitarian completion.

Deeper Reading

The Life Path is the most commonly cited numerology number but only one of several. A complete numerological profile also requires the Destiny, Soul Urge and Personality numbers from the full birth name. Reading only the Life Path is roughly equivalent to reading only the sun sign.
