Fate
EsotericDefinition
A predetermined course of events, often conceived as inescapable and external to human will. In esoteric thought, fate is contrasted with destiny (chosen path) and free will (active agency).
Origin
Fate as a concept appears in Greek myth (the Moirai — Clotho, Lachesis, Atropos), Roman thought (the Parcae), Norse cosmology (the Norns), and Hindu doctrine (prarabdha karma). Each tradition develops a distinct view of how much of life is fixed and how much is malleable.
Development
Hellenistic astrology developed a nuanced view: planetary positions describe inevitable tendencies (fate) which a wise person can navigate (destiny) through conscious choice (free will). This three-fold distinction remains useful in modern esoteric practice and avoids both fatalism and naive voluntarism.
In Practice
In divinatory practice, fate-readings address structural conditions that will play out regardless of effort (the natal chart, current transits). Destiny-readings address the path through those conditions. Free-will readings address moment-by-moment choices. A complete reading distinguishes all three.
Deeper Reading
The Stoic philosophical view holds that while events are fixed (fate), the response to events is free (will). This synthesis underlies much esoteric counselling: the cards may show what is coming, but the reader's skill is helping the querent meet it from their own agency.
