Destiny Number

Numerology

Definition

The numerology number derived from converting all letters of a person's full birth name to numbers and reducing the sum, representing what the person is here to accomplish.

Origin

Letter-to-number conversion systems date to the Pythagorean tradition, with the Chaldean and Kabbalistic systems offering alternate mappings. Modern Western numerology uses the Pythagorean system standardised by Balliett and Campbell in the early 20th century.

Development

Each letter A-Z is assigned a number 1-9 (Pythagorean) or 1-8 (Chaldean, skipping 9). The full birth name is summed and reduced. Master numbers 11, 22, 33 are preserved. The Destiny is also called Expression Number in some lineages.

In Practice

The Destiny number describes the talents, opportunities and challenges the person carries through life. Where Life Path is the path travelled (chosen at birth), Destiny is the work to be done (assigned at naming). Both numbers together describe the journey and its purpose.

Deeper Reading

Modern numerologists ask which "full birth name" applies — the legal birth name on the certificate or the name actually used? Different schools differ. Most agree on the legal birth name; some recalculate Destiny if a name is significantly changed (adoption, marriage, transition).
