Astrological Houses

Astrology

Definition

The 12 divisions of the natal chart that map planetary placements to spheres of life — identity, finances, communication, home, creativity, work, partnerships, transformation, philosophy, career, community, the unconscious.

Origin

The house system was developed by Hellenistic astrologers in the 2nd century BCE as a way to localise planetary energies to specific areas of human life. Earlier Babylonian astrology used the signs without houses; the houses are a Greek innovation.

Development

Several competing house systems exist: Placidus (most popular in modern Western astrology), Whole Sign (oldest, used in Hellenistic and Vedic), Koch, Equal House. Each calculates the cusps slightly differently, producing different placements for planets near house boundaries.

In Practice

A planet's house placement tells you where in life its energy plays out. Mars in the 7th house brings martial energy to partnerships; Mars in the 10th brings it to career. Mastering houses is the next step after sun-moon-ascendant.

Deeper Reading

The choice of house system is more than a technicality — it can shift placements by an entire house. Most modern astrologers either stay with Placidus by default or use Whole Sign for clarity in research and teaching. Switching systems and noting differences sharpens interpretive skill.
